Per, a con-man, is hired by factory owner Lorentzen to burn down his own factory for insurance purposes. Per messes up the assignment, injuring a night guard in the process. Lorentzen decides to send Per out of town until the police stop snooping around. Per agrees, on condition that Marianne, Lorentzen’s upper-class wife accompanies him – as a sort of hostage.

Coming from two different planets, they hate each other. But as time and life goes on, things change.
